Can Erel – Surprise, it’s not me!

Can Erel recently graduated from the University of Twente with a BSc in Creative Technology. This work is part of his thesis, which he conducted mostly back home in Turkey.

Surprise, It’s Not Me! Is an interactive installation that creates a space for recognizing the beauty and excitement of forming connections, at a moment of heightened self-absorption. 

This moment is generated by concave mirrors that present a high definition and isolated image of the self while leaving the surroundings distorted and blurry.

The installation is a response to our psychosocial dynamics that has been further distorted by the pandemic.

Ernesto Walker – So Close and yet So Far…

During specials events in the evenings, Ernesto will be presnet at the exhibition through a Zoom link to talk about his experiences as a remote artist-in-residence. How can you communicate through a robot without speaking? And what connection do you get with the community? There are a limited number of places available, so book as soon as possible a free spot at XPO through this link.

“So close and yet so far” is an art project inspired by interplanetary explorations such as those sent to Mars in recent years. The piece consists of sending a reconnaissance robot controlled remotely by the author to places of our own world, explore them and re-realize them from the point of view of a technology that, in some cases, tends to get us closer in and in other cases gets us more apart.


This project of Ernesto Walker (Mexico) has had three missions. The first two in Mexico in 2015 and 2016. The third one this year in Enschede as a remote artist-in-residence. The last mission is especially addressing the pandemic situation and the vicissitudes of being an artist in residence through a robot.

Talía Falcón Nizarane –

U N W I N N A B L E

Talía Falcón Nizarane (Havana, Cuba, 1997) is a young artist committed with the topic of the social role of arts. She studied at “San Alejandro Academy” and at “ISA University of Arts of Cuba” before coming to Enschede for a three months residence program at Artist Residencies Enschede (ARE). She now presents the solo exhibition “UNWINNABLE” as a conclusion of her journey, a journey marked by the appearance of a world-scale threat.


 
It all started with the posters Talía faced when coming to The Netherlands from Zurich, where she spent some time working. “Stay at home, save lives” sounds now like an almost universal quote. But what to do when one does not have a place to call “home” where to “stay at”? Or when a bigger threat coexists with you inside? 
 
>From the biggest poster hanging on the street to the tiny words written in our passports, language shapes the world around and inside every one of us. It decides which doors we can open, and which must still remain close. 


 
“UNWINNABLE” reflects on the malleability, yet rigidity inherent to written language and in the complexity it brings into human relationships in times of crisis.

Claudio Beorchia & Thiago Hersan – Signals and Words

The exhibition collects the artifacts created by Thiago Hersan (BR) and Claudio Beorchia (IT) during their artist-in-residence at Artist Residencies Enschede. These artifacts are heterogeneous objects, texts, devices and apparatus, distant from each other in time, medium and materials. Through these objects, the artists create folds, interstices, breaches and possibilities that talk about the status of our contemporaneity, our actions and our behaviors.

The objects presented by Thiago point to different measuring rituals for a new kind of astronomy where electromagnetic transmissions can be read like stars.

In Claudio’s works language has a central role. Words – or their absence – are the material, the tool he uses to reveal and give shape to his reflections.

Christel Burghoorn & Magrit Ruset – Busstop

“What drives us?” is an art project carried out within the framework of taNDem, a cross-border art and culture project of the EUREGIO, and supported by INTERREG. This year’s theme is: “Energy. What drives us?”

Margit Rusert and Christel Burghoorn have selected ten bus stops in different places along the route between their homes and workspaces. In each of the ten bus stops an answer to the question: “What drives us?” was implemented in a one-day art installation. These installations have inspired bus passengers and passers-by to ask themselves what drives them, motivates them, what gives them energy.

In the project exhibition in the XPO room, the answers Rusert and Burghoorn received are shown alongside photos and details of the installations in the bus shelters.

“Wat beweegt ons?” is een kunstproject dat wordt uitgevoerd in het kader van taNDem, een grensoverschrijdend kunst- en cultuurproject van de EUREGIO, en dat wordt ondersteund door INTERREG. Het thema van dit jaar is: “Energie. Wat drijft ons?

Margit Rusert en Christel Burghoorn hebben tien bushaltes geselecteerd op verschillende plaatsen langs de route tussen hun woon- en werkplaatsen. In elk van de tien bushaltes werd een antwoord op de vraag: “Wat drijft ons?” geïmplementeerd in een ééndaagse kunstinstallatie. Deze installaties hebben busreizigers en voorbijgangers geïnspireerd om zich af te vragen wat hen drijft, motiveert en energie geeft.

In de projecttentoonstelling in XPO worden de antwoorden die Rusert en Burghoorn kregen, getoond naast foto’s en details van de installaties in de bushokjes.

„Was treibt uns an?“ ist ein Kunstprojekt, durchgeführt im Rahmen von taNDem, einem grenzüberschreitenden Kunst- und Kulturprojekt der EUREGIO, und gefördert durch INTERREG. Das diesjährige Thema ist: „Energie. Was treibt uns an?“

Margit Rusert und Christel Burghoorn haben auf der Route zwischen ihren Wohn- und Arbeitsorten zehn Bushaltestellen in verschiedenen Orten ausgewählt. In jeder der zehn Bushaltestellen wurde eine Antwort auf die Frage: “Was treibt uns an?” in einer eintägigen Kunst- Installation umgesetzt. Diese Installationen haben Busfahrende und Passanten inspiriert, sich selbst die Frage zu stellen, was sie antreibt, motiviert, was ihnen Energie gibt.

In der Projektausstellung im XPO Raum werden die Antworten, die Rusert und Burghoorn bekommen haben, neben Fotos und Details der Installationen in den Wartehäuschen gezeigt.

Dirk Comello – Residency Dalian


The exhibition by Dirk Comello shows works he created during his residency in Dalian (China) in 2018. In drawings Dirk captures his impressions and the products of the many Chinese markets and the origins of Chinese characters.

“The visual origin of Chinese characters opens the opportunity to see them as representations of human experiences in general” – Dirk Comello.

The exhibition also includes drawings from Dirk’s residency in Clairmont, New York which he attended at the end of 2019.

This exhibition is a result from the warm cooperation between the city of Enschede, Dalian Zhongshan Art museum (China) and ARE (Artist Residencies Enschede)

Erica Ferrari – Has always been dystopia


The more productivity increases, the more misery increases – it is the dystopia of a world that would benefit from industrialization, that would provide social equality and free humanity from mechanical, non reflective work. But capitalism has accelerated the creation of more work, the continual overload, the consumerism and the annihilation of nature and people systematically. Workers remain subdued today, with other parameters from third sector activity and the replacement of formal work by a model of individual entre-preneurship.
Mud, oil, totalitarian regimes – “from the periphery emerges urgency” *: the basis needs to be changed.

Melle Foortjes & Judith Glimmerveen – Unravel

During the Photofestival 2019, AKI ArtEZ students exhibit at XPO in Roombeek. From new work and personal starting points, they enter a dialogue with the theme ‘Inner Circles’.

In her work “Rhizoma”, Melle Foortjes explores the relationships between herself, her work, her processes and her environment. These elements come together in an overall-installation. Rhizoma is a representation of the philosophical concept “Rhizome” by Gilles Deleuze, which deals with how elements and their environments influence each other and therefore always change into new qualities that are open to new connections.

In her work “111 days in Jerusalem” Judith Glimmerveen reports on her experiences in Jerusalem, where she studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design during the past semester. She shows her perspective on the city, everyday life and what connects and separates people.

The Fine Art & Cross Media Design study programs work in a multidisciplinary manner, which influences the form of presentation. The medium of photography is at the basis of the work.

Gaolu Han – Stroll by Traveling

Gaolu Han presents an intermediate between representationalism and expressionism. This status derives from experience in Chinese cultural background and exploration on Western artistic forms. The path of the works has characteristic pluralism with rational and critical thinking, and the feeling of painting with a sensitive trans experience combined with the identity of the artist.

Gaolu Han about his work:
Currently，traveling inspired me and this experience works as a trigger which drives me to be immersed in existence，change and relevance. Meanwhile, in the context between the splendid art of the Netherlands and contemporary art, I meditate that I can cross the cultural areas, including exchanging，talking and co-existing. What I mentioned above, I present like traveling along a stream, painting a line, brush stroke, gradation, temperament and ink …


Han is an artist from Dalian (China). This year Enschede and Dalian celebrate 10 years of collaboration between two sister cities. With this year’s artists’ exchange, ARE and the Dalian Zhongshan Art museum honor the warm cooperation of recent years in the cultural field. In tribute to the 10-year anniversary, Han also participates in the Two Sisters art project, initiated by Marc Boumeester of AKI ArtEz.

I-Yen Chen – A State of Obscurity

Thus are borders defined.

I-Yen Chen (Taiwan) is a visual artist who has been an artist in residence at ARE since the end of April this year. Currently I-Yen is based between Taiwan and Australia. With her background in the humanities and personal experience, she is very interested in historical events and human mindsets.

In the last several years, I-Yen has been exploring and developing the concept metaphorical landscapes to present landscapes not as eternal or objective, but as a reflection of human memory and dreams. I-Yen believes that it is through the unending transformation of this space that we settle in, and find affinity with, the world around us.
